Usage rights, clearly agreedImage fees and licences documented in a legally sound way

Whether a time-limited campaign or permanent use, print or online: clear licence agreements give you certainty and rule out later disputes about the scope of use.

A contract granting usage rights as a finished PDF, with the photographer’s logo in the header.
What the contract states

Four variables, and none of them goes without saying

They differ with every job, and with every job they belong in the document.

Type of right: non-exclusive or exclusive

With a non-exclusive right, the image can still be used by others. With an exclusive one it can’t, not even by you.

Type of use: media and channels

Print, website, social media, advertising. If the type of use is in the contract, there is no question about it later.

Territorial scope

One country, the German-speaking region, worldwide. For campaigns, the difference determines the fee.

Duration

One campaign, one year, unlimited. If it isn’t stated, it will be argued about later.

From the last job

No accidental transfer of rights through old documents

Copying an old contract as a Word file for a new job risks costly oversights: if a worldwide or exclusive right of use granted earlier is accidentally left in, you give away valuable image rights below their value. In DocuNorm, type of right, media, territory and duration are set up as mandatory fields. The scope of the licence is defined anew for every project, so old agreements cannot be carried over unnoticed.
